Hurricane Francine Reopening Update

We are pleased to inform you that school system employees have assessed all sites and were able to make modifications necessary to ensure an environment conducive to learning. Additionally, we have been notified that electricity will be restored at all sites before tomorrow morning with the possible exception of Carver Early Learning Center. Therefore, all St. Charles Parish Public Schools and offices – except Carver – will reopen tomorrow, September 13, 2024, and Carver will reopen on Monday, September 16. Carver employees will be contacted by their supervisor in regards to when and where to report for work on Friday.

We understand the challenges some of our parish residents continue to face. However, reopening schools is crucial not only for the continuity of learning but also for the broader community. Many of our working families rely on the stability our schools provide, and we take seriously our responsibility to support them as they return to work. Our schools also offer a safe, structured environment where students can access essential services, including meals and social-emotional support.

Please note:

  • Both high school football games originally scheduled for Friday, September 13 have been postponed, and the schools are working to reschedule these games.
  • Before and after school care will be offered.
  • We recommend monitoring your individual school’s website and social media accounts for updates regarding any other afterschool activities.
  • Expect some minor delays in transportation.
  • Parent notes may excuse an absence if within the allowable limit of absences.

By reopening, we aim to restore a sense of normalcy, provide our students with the education they deserve, and continue serving as a vital resource for our community.

We appreciate your understanding, cooperation, and continued support.

As we continue to prepare for Tropical Storm Francine’s landfall, we want to remind you that all St. Charles Parish Public Schools and the School Board Office will remain closed on Wednesday and Thursday, September 11-12, 2024. We understand the uncertainty storms bring and are committed to keeping you informed. By Thursday afternoon, we will provide an update on the status of school operations for Friday after an assessment of the storm’s impact.

In preparation for the storm’s aftermath, school system employees have diligently implemented the action steps found in our Hurricane Preparedness and Recovery Plan. Learning from our experience with Hurricane Ida, the St. Charles Parish School Board approved standing emergency contractors to utilize as needed for immediate remediation and recovery efforts. Our goal is to return to our core business of teaching and learning through normal operations as soon as conditions will safely allow.

Please continue to monitor www.WeAreSCPPS.org and the school system's official social media accounts for the latest updates. _________________________________________________________________________________

Originally developed after Hurricane Katrina and updated annually, this plan outlines action steps for school sites and departments through each phase: proactive preparation, specific storm readiness, immediate response, and post-storm recovery.
