Superintendent Presents at Chamber Forum

The River Region Chamber of Commerce (RRCOC) is committed to being a catalyst that unites local communities. The organization lived up to its mission on Thursday, March 14 when they hosted the Tri-Parish Unity Superintendent Forum. Held at River Parishes Community College in Reserve, business leaders had the opportunity to engage with three local superintendents, who touted the cooperative efforts between their districts and local businesses.

Board Chair Libby Hotard kicked off the event by introducing and welcoming superintendents Dr. Ken Oertling (St. Charles Parish Public Schools), Chris Kimball (St. James Public Schools), and Dr. Cleo Perry (St. John the Baptist Public Schools). Each district leader provided an individual update, followed by a unified message to local business leaders: collaborating on workforce development initiatives is vital for regional industries. Likewise, we must align a curriculum that supports workforce opportunities. Dr. Oertling said it best, “Our school systems simply cannot operate in silos if we want to be effective in this region.”

Great success has stemmed from workforce partnerships. For starters, an increasing number of students are graduating with earned college credits or industry-based certifications, adhering to each district’s goal of producing career-ready graduates. In one parish, Marathon’s donation of $350,000 helped expand their welding department and attract more students to the program. In another, eighty students were currently taking advantage of internships with local business partners, preparing them for the future while putting money in their pockets today. Continuing these partnerships is a win-win for everyone.

“Events such as this are instrumental in facilitating dialogue and collaboration among our members," said Chassity McComack, Executive Director. "Increased engagement allows us to leverage our collective expertise in creating new and exciting opportunities for our region."
