On Saturday, May 16, 2026, voters in St. Charles Parish will consider the renewal of two separate millages related to funding for the school system. In simple terms, a millage is a local property tax approved by voters. One mill equals $1 for every $1,000 of a property’s assessed value. These local taxes are one of the primary ways Louisiana’s school systems fund their operations and maintain facilities.

These are NOT NEW TAXES

Both propositions on the ballot represent the renewal of an existing millage for a ten-year period:

Operations and Maintenance Millage
This millage supports the school system’s budget for day-to-day operations and maintenance. These funds help support essential functions that allow our schools to operate each day, including maintaining safe and functional facilities, utilities, transportation-related operations, and the staffing necessary to support students and schools across the parish.
Construction and Facility Improvements Millage
This millage supports long-term investments in school facilities, including construction, renovations, and major improvements needed to maintain and enhance learning environments across the district.

Stable and predictable funding – both for daily operations and long-term facility needs – plays an important role in sustaining an effective and efficient school system.

Regardless of individual viewpoints, voting is one of the most important ways citizens engage in decisions that impact their community. Participation helps ensure that election outcomes reflect the voices of those they affect. State law allows the school system to provide factual information related to ballot items, but each voter must make their own independent decision.
