AI can be a helpful tool when students give it clear directions. Instead of asking, “Make this better,” students can ask AI to help with a specific task, such as brainstorming ideas, organizing thoughts, simplifying information, asking questions, or improving a draft.

Before using AI, remember:

AI can help students get started, understand information, organize work, or improve writing. However, it should not do the thinking for students, complete assignments for them, or replace teacher directions. Students are still responsible for their own learning, choices, and final work.

AI gives better responses when you are clear about what you need. A helpful prompt usually includes:

For example:

“Pretend you are a reading helper. Help me understand this paragraph from my science article. Explain it in simpler words and give me three key ideas in a bullet list.”

This helps AI understand the kind of help you want, what you are working on, and how you want the answer organized.

AI works better when you clearly explain what kind of help you need. Strong prompts tell AI what you are working on, what kind of help you want, and how you want the response organized.

Try adding details like:

“Explain it in simpler words.”
“Use bullet points.”
“Give me three examples.”
“Ask me one question at a time.”
“Do not write it for me. Help me understand it.”
“Give me feedback, but do not rewrite the whole thing.”
“Create a table with columns for term, meaning, and example.”

Try these student prompt ideas:

"Can you explain these directions in simpler words: [paste directions]?”

“Can you help me brainstorm ideas for this topic: [topic]? Do not write the assignment for me.”
