Related & Direct Services

Related Services 

Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), related services are developmental, corrective, and supportive services that are necessary for a child with a disability to benefit from special education.  Receipt of these services is determined by meeting specific criteria assessed by the appropriate professionals during the evaluation process.  Service delivery varies and is dependent upon individual needs identified through the evaluation process.  

Related services may include:

  • Speech-Language Pathology Services
  • Augmentative, Alternative Communication (AAC)
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Physical Therapy
  • School Health Services/Nursing
  • Transportation
  • Counseling

Direct Services 

Direct services, in addition to those provided by a special education teacher, are provided by specialized personnel.  The qualification of these services is determined through the evaluation process and is dependent upon individual needs.

Direct services may include:

  • Teacher of the Deaf or Hard of Hearing
  • Teacher of the Visually Impaired
  • Adapted Physical Education Teacher
